The Frequently Asked Question section offers answers to commonly asked questions that concern the application of Edgebanding and Hotmelt Adhesives.

Answer: The width of an Edgebanding should be 1.5mm (1/16”) wider on either side of the board thickness. For example, a 19mm melamine board requires a 22mm Edgebanding. Correspondingly, a ¾” melamine board requires 1/8” wider Edgebanding (2 x 1/16”) for a total Edgebanding width of 7/8. If a board is laid up with High-Pressure Laminate (HPL), the thickness of the finished board increases and the width of the Edgebanding increases to 15/16”.
Answer: The thickness of the Edgebanding depends on customer preference or specifications set by architects and designers. The current Edgebanding thickness in kitchens is typically 0.018” for the cabinet and 1mm thickness for the door. Some customers use 1mm for cabinets and doors to make Edgebanding sourcing easier or offer customers options to upgrade their cabinetry with a rounded, more refined edge. The same philosophy applies to closets and other residential furniture.

On store fixtures, the Edgebanding thickness varies from 0.018” to 3mm depending on the budget and quality of the store fixture. The general guideline is that thicker Edgebanding is better suited for high traffic areas as it can absorb higher impacts without sacrificing the quality of the store fixture.

For commercial applications, the Edgebanding thicknesses is generally specified by an architect or designer who is responsible for the interior design of the project. The general guideline is that thicker Edgebanding is better suited for high traffic areas.

Architects and designers prefer thicker Edgebanding up to 3mm for locker cabinets, classroom tables or cabinets, or healthcare and dental furniture as thicker Edgebanding absorb impacts much better than thinner Edgebanding.

Answer: The table below shows the recommended laydown of filled and unfilled adhesives in grams per square meter of board and the yield of board coverage. At 260 grams per square meter a pound of filled glue will cover 358 feet of 16mm board. At 180 grams per square meter a pound of unfilled glue will cover 514 feet of 16mm board, a difference of 44%. Although unfilled adhesive costs more, it yields 40% more coverage of board as the amount of applied glue is less.
Answer: Granular or pellets are designed for edgebanders with different dispensing systems. Granular Hotmelt Adhesives are for edgebanders with a glue pot (e.g. Homag, Brandt, Biesse, IMA) whereas cartridge adhesives are for edgebanders with a cartridge dispensing system (e.g. Holzher).

Answer: As the table below shows, the major differences between PUR and EVA adhesives are heat and moisture resistance as well as the highest bonding strength.

Breaking down these three advantages of PUR adhesives over EVA adhesives, PUR adhesives create a thermoset bond versus EVA adhesives creating a thermoplastic bond. As the name thermoset suggests, PUR adhesives are thermally set and do not liquify when exposed to heat.

Conversely, EVA adhesives are thermoplastic and liquify when exposed to heat. As a result, PUR adhesives offer the highest and permanent bonding strength. Secondly, PUR adhesives seals the glue line against the penetration of moisture avoiding panel swelling. PUR adhesives are perfectly suited for applications with high heat or moisture exposure such as kitchens, bathrooms or when transporting furniture components to hot and humid climates. It is important to note that PUR adhesives require regular glue pot cleaning (at end of work day) and an exhaust systems on the edgebander as the PUR adhesives contain cyanites.
