Can You Mix Different Types of Hotmelts When Edgebanding? Absolutely Not!

One question we occasionally hear in the field is: “Is it okay to mix different types of hotmelt adhesives when applying edgebanding?” The short answer is a firm no—and here’s why.

Hotmelts may all look similar, but their chemical compositions are not. EVA, PUR, PO, and PO adhesives each have unique melting points, processing temperatures, open times, and application requirements. Mixing them is like pouring both gasoline and diesel into your car’s fuel tank—it’s a recipe for poor performance, equipment issues, or complete failure.

When switching from one type of hotmelt to another, always clean out the glue pot completely. This ensures no residue from the previous adhesive compromises the new formulation, helping you maintain a high-quality bond and extend your equipment’s lifespan.

Stick with one formulation per job—and when in doubt, clean it out.
