The Right Edgebanding Size
When it comes to achieving a flawless edge finish and smooth production flow, selecting the correct edgebanding width is critical. Using the wrong width can lead to vibration during trimming, poor adhesion, or a less-than-perfect final product.
A good rule of thumb: edgebanding should not exceed 1/8″ over the thickness of your panel—that’s 1/16″ overhang on both the top and bottom. This slight overhang provides just enough material to ensure clean trimming while minimizing movement or vibration during processing. The result? A solid bond and crisp edge finish that holds up over time.
Let’s break it down:
- For TFL (Thermally Fused Laminate) panels, a 7/8″ wide edgebanding typically does the job.
- When working with HPL (High Pressure Laminate) laminated panels—which add a bit more thickness to your base board—a 15/16″ edgebanding is more appropriate.
To simplify stocking and application, most edgebanding manufacturers default to 15/16″ width, as it comfortably covers both TFL and HPL panels.
Bottom line: choosing the right edgebanding width upfront ensures a smoother process, better finish, and fewer production issues down the line.
